Birch Relic

Birch Relic
This cup is a proper relic of the past! I think I carved this when I lived in a yurt four a couple years in the Catskill Mountains in Upstate New York. Really I should keep it for when I’m an old man and I run a museum of all of my oddities, tools, and collections. But I remember carving this and knowing it was born for a new home. I guess it’s been floating around in storage for years up at North House Folk School as their school store and offices have changed locations and addresses many time since then. I was quite shocked to see some old work walk back into my life. Back then I used to drive 36 hours to teach classes! I was a bit of a madman back then trying to cross pollinate as much handicraft as possible, and I’d leave a sampling of my work in their really tiny gift shop back then.
It instantly brings back memories of the paper birch I carved it from. I felled that tree during a really cold winter, and carved up every inch of it into cups, spoons, bowls, tool handles, and other kitchenalia. What a time..
It’s amazing that I’ve always found a way to make a living carving. My cups are much different today, but if you’re into my older style, here is probably the last opportunity.
If you’ve followed my story for a long time, maybe this kuksa is for you?
