A short film on a new project
I just got back from Sweden a couple days ago and wanted to carve something that represents where my mind has been.
I'm calling it "Head in the Clouds."
This is just the beginning stages of my "layout" which I don't really do a lot of. I am a musician at heart which influences how I approach my Slöjd work, which is rooted in folk art, rebellion, not being told what to do, and improvisation always.
I am now adding these "captive panels" carved into it's sides like window frames that you'll see dream clouds brewing against a mountain desert landscape that exists inside my head.
The music is more of my "field recordings" where I usually just hit record and make believe I'm on some old dusty radio station and the radio guy passes me some clunky junky instrument, I give it the quickest tuning and play the first thing that comes out of my fingertips.
You can hear me playing this horribly downtuned banjo and I'm trying to find a note that brings a feeling and it all just clicks, right into a song as if you were spinning an old car radio dial hearing all the distorted sounds and white noise, and then boom.. a solid song and rhythm pours out. You can also hear bacon frying in the background, the hum and bump of the dishwasher, car keys, my girlfriend talking, and the cat meowin'
These were unplanned recordings and my favorite thing to do to let my mind wander. So you hear it live, full of life and mess ups. I rarely ever go back through my massive archive of field recordings until I need a soundtrack for a film I'm working on. I think some of these would make great songs but I never really go back to refresh them, re-record them over. I guess that's what makes them special, hairy, and feral.
I've always wanted to put out an album but I don't often write words, or know what an album of mine would look like. But I'm thinking an ongoing album of these field recordings would make an interesting ever growing album of material from my travels and wanderings, often alone with a daydream like quality.
Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in as I'd just upload it free to one of the music platforms.
